The Shabbat Primer: Practicalities

The Shabbat Primer: Practicalities: "ince driving is forbidden and since you have new priorities for Shabbat, more time will be spent in or near the home. It therefore becomes desirable to rearrange the child's schedule as much as possible so that it won't interfere with everyone else's.
Very young babies are hard to schedule. You can try to feed them before the family eats so that during the meal the baby will be content and, hopefully, after the meal, sleepy. Then it might be possible for you to get some rest, too.

It's awkward to keep everyone waiting for kiddush while Mommy's nursing, but if it occasionally happens, there's no reason for panic. If the family and guests would like to wait until you're done, fine. Otherwise, you can go ahead with kiddush and then serve some cake or cookies to hold everyone until you're ready to join them for the meal."

Patti Boom Boom's Blog

Patti Boom Boom's Blog: "ports has been the greatest metaphor of life for me and I am forever grateful for each lesson learned. In 1996, I participated in my first Daily News NYC Golden Gloves. In my first match in the prelims, I fought a girl named Barbosa who had just got out of prison and her total focus was to eat me alive, but I gave her 3 standing eight counts and ended the bout in the 1st round. I moved to the semi-finals and faced the previous year's champion, Christine Bruno. I was the inexperienced younger fighter at the time & a huge underdog, but I ended up stopping her in the 2nd round and moving to the finals in Madison Square Garden."

48 PAINTINGS FOR MY 48TH BIRTHDAY

48 PAINTINGS FOR MY 48TH BIRTHDAY: " which include the dawn of new beginnings and the mourning of old endings. I have physically moved away from family, friends, support systems, and home, and found myself with out internet or phone for the last month. There has been plenty to do with a good job, wonderful students and stacks of syllabi. But above all I try to digest a new found and mostly awkward silence and, when I start to panic, I make room for stillness.
I bought canvases last week!"

Lamed Vav Tzadikim « TheWritersCafe.org

Lamed Vav Tzadikim « TheWritersCafe.org: "When I was in high school, I had a teacher who taught us about the nature of the element of silver in a class called Photo Science. He mentioned that one could never really see silver, because it was an element that was sensitive to light, the very moment the light hit the silver it would be changed. I can even recall the hand gesture my teacher made when he explained the concept. The idea he was explaining was that the surface of the silver we see, had already been exposed to light, and the very moment we scratch the surface of the silver (to see the unreacted silver underneath) it will have already changed. This is somehow part of my belief, as I write these pages. Whatever I will learn, and whatever I will seek to explain, as I write these words that you are now reading, will somehow at least in concept change the mysterious or hidden nature of the Lamed Vav Tzadikim."

We Must All Do the Thing that Our Hearts Tell Us, We Must Do « TheWritersCafe.org

We Must All Do the Thing that Our Hearts Tell Us, We Must Do « TheWritersCafe.org: "the danger of waiting for some sort of solution, to some extremely complex problem, to simply fall down from heaven, can even often be far greater than simply acting with all the information of the complex situation that we are confronted with.

Acting and doing is essential for life, for life goes on with or without us. When the great train of life stops right in front of you, and opens it’s doors, all that is required is that you step on, because the great train of life, has many stops ahead, and many people to pick up along the way to eternity."

Spirituality… « TheWritersCafe.org: "the wind, which can not be seen,

Rips through the Trees, and scatters its seed,

So does the spirit, which sleeps within its host,

Moves not a thing, until it, itself is moved,

Then once moved, by a thought, a vision. a dream,"

The Jewish Standard

The Jewish Standard: "onservative Judaism taking outreach seriously. (Next week, we'll be reporting on EZ-Key, a similar program out of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey).

But a thumbs down for their gratuitous use of Hebrew jargon.

Conservative kehillot from all across the world are offering Free High Holiday Tickets and/or Home Hospitality to alumni of conservative movement programs!

Click here to find a participating kehillah near you. Don't forget to check the list often, more kehillot sign up every day.

Kehilot?

That's Hebrew for communities.

If you've been paying attention to the ins-and-outs of the United Synagogue recently -- and why would you? -- you'll recall that the United Synagogue, the umbrella group for Conservative congregations, felt they had to respond to the challenge of "indie minyanim," where young adults gather to worship without a building fund or rabbi, by offering to serve minyans as well as congregations."

Lamed Vav Tzadikim « TheWritersCafe.org

Lamed Vav Tzadikim « TheWritersCafe.org: "The idea of Lamed Vav actually standing for the numerical value of 36, may indeed be secondary to understanding the meaning of the shape of the Hebrew letters. Lamed is distinct in that it is the only Hebrew letter that goes above the guideline. Kabbalistically this can be explained to be the letter that taps into shemayim (heaven) to capture a creation or an idea. However capturing an idea alone might not be enough, and that is where the Vav comes in. The straight line from the top to the bottom which can be thought of to be the essence of the Vav, is what is needed to take an idea who’s origin is in Shemayim, and bring it down to the world where it van be revealed, understood, and acted upon."
